Something like that?
I certainly prefer it to hex.
Wouldn’t seagate still need additional something to translate the raw into something readable?
I only have the command saved somewhere for smartctl. Never tried it in a gui frankly
The most relevant values are directly readable. Hex or decimal, the temperature readings do not quite make sense but there’s nothing obviously suspicious. The long test has not halted on reading some sectors, as one could have feared.
Still I’d like to see the log of SMART errors from -x or any equivalent display in a GUI.
True, but was wondering about the Raw values for field 01/05, also wondering if field BC is why we had this one shitting the bed. Always a pain translating some of this stuff.
I could possibly put it back into the NAS, but I don’t know if I can run tests on it there without adding it to the pool again?
Yes, you can run tests on that disk. It doesn’t have to be attached to a pool for testing.
wouldn’t even need to re-run the tests, just something like this:
smartctl -a /dev/sdx -v 1,raw48:54 (replace ‘x’ with disk in question)
you can add additional -v #,raw48:54 to the command (replacing ‘#’ with whatever raw field it is you’re trying to translate)
Or look for a CLI smartctl for Windows.
Or boot the Windows PC from a Linux LiveUSB…
Ok, gave up having it on the windows PC and put it back into the NAS.
Hope I got this right:
root@truenas[~]# smartctl -x /dev/sdc
smartctl 7.4 2023-08-01 r5530 [x86_64-linux-6.12.15-production+truenas] (local build)

Given you have or had at least one bad sector can I suggest finding a program that will write to every sector on the disk multiple times (preferably) and run that over the drive. Will take a while.
badblocks is an example. There are windows programs that do the same
mind doing this: smartctl -a /dev/sdc -v 1,raw48:54 -v 7,raw48:54
It’s back on the PC right now running through this:
But when it’s done, I will swap it back over and check that.
And finished scan with no warnings. Will swap it back into the NAS tomorrow and run - smartctl -a /dev/sdc -v 1,raw48:54 -v 7,raw48:54
Note you did a scan. I was reccomending a complete low level format with multiple bit patterns. This will take something in the order of a week with the size of the disk you are talking about.
It’s called badblocks. Open a command line start tmux, and run a 4 pattern test using sttings appropriate for the size of drive. This is going to take about a week or more.

Selective self-test flags (0x0):
After scanning selected spans, do NOT read-scan remainder of disk.
If Selective self-test is pending on power-up, resume after 0 minute delay.
The above only provides legacy SMART information - try ‘smartctl -x’ for more
Ouch, wonder if my PC will agree to stay on that long without falling over itself.
This one sounds a bit past my know how, this whole event is my second time doing anything in the shell. Will probably have to work out a way to do it on the PC. Or maybe plugged into laptop since that would use less power.
Honestly disk looks fine. All I see is a single command time-out.
Would I personally run ‘badblocks’ for this 1 specific drive & spend a week of additional testing? No, because I’d have already run that before ever putting my data on it.
Anyway, up to you if you want to keep hitting the drive with more tests, but I have ~85% trust that this drive is ok
Back when I built the NAS in the first place, I think this test checked every sector on them. Or wrote to all of it, can’t 100% remember.
Reading through a badblocks guide atm and trying to work out the command to run it on that drive.
badblocks -b 4096 -ws /dev/sda
Something like that?
You might need to double the 4096. badblocks is I think an old 32 bit application that can’t handle really big drives without adjusting the block size
Make sure you do this on the correct drive
