I have been reading and watching videos on Youtube regarding how I should configure my drive pool in TrueNAS on my HL8. I am brand new to TrueNAS so I would like to hear what people actually have in production in their homelabs.
I have four 12TB Ironwolf Pro ST12000NE0008 drives and four 16TB Ironwolf Pro ST 16000NE000 drives.
My intial thought was to create two pools. One with the 12TB drives and the other the 16TB drives. I plan to setup a nextcloud share so I can host my own files and get away from google and MS drives. I will store family photos, music, etc on that drive. Because the photos are important to me and my family, I want to ensure that I don’t lose them, so redundancy is important. I also plan on setting up backups of my Proxmox VM’s to this NAS as well.
I have seen recommendations to setup mirror pairs with 2 Vdev’s or RaidZ1 with one Vdev. I would also mention that I have another Synology NAS that I plan on setting up a backup of the photos to this drive as well. I have looked at the ZFS Capacity Calculator and see that the capacity between the two are not that far off but it says the efficiency is better with the mirror. I would also mention some of the concepts on the calculator page I don’t understand yet. For example, ZFS recordsize primer, ashift value, and deflate ratio.
Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks,
John
