Advice about updating from TrueNAS Core to Scale on a Supermicro X9SCM-F system

I am currently running TrueNAS-13.0-U6.1 on a Supermicro X9SCM-F system with Xeon E3-1240V2 CPU and 16Gb ECC memory. I originally built the system in 2014 and it has been running flawlessly for me all these years. I use one SSD for the OS, one SSD for Jails, and 4x4tb hard drives in a RaidZ2 configuration. I don’t push it too hard… PC backup, file serving, and Plex are its tasks.

Because I am a glutton for punishment (and possibly an idiot), I want to explore some new Plex features and have decided that it’s time to update to TrueNAS Scale and also install the latest version of Plex.

Is this hardware still up to the task? Any thoughts or advice?

Thanks for your input

IMHO yes. Your CPU Is already an overkill for the basic usage, so you have a bit margin also to explore some other service

I would suggest to max the RAM at 32gb, should be a cheap but valuable upgrade in any case

Agree with Oxyde. That hardware isn’t what I’d recommend today (the Java-based IPMI is a liability), but I wouldn’t see any reason to upgrade (other than the RAM).

Thanks for your comments. RAM upgrade is ordered and on the way.

Back in the day, I followed some sage advice about buying used good quality server components rather than cheaper consumer hardware. Other than replacing disks and fans from time to time, the machine has been remarkable. It is on a good quality UPS and I don’t mess with it very often.
