ASRock ROMED8-2T/BCM Mini SAS to DAS Enclosure + ZFS (through ProxMox)

Hi Community - I am thinking about using my existing ProxMox server to host a backup TrueNAS server. I already have a dedicated 8Bay TrueNAS server humming along fine. Since the ProxMox server has tons of resources available, I am thinking about setting up TrueNAS VM (passthrough onboard Mini SAS Controller connected to external DAS) as second/backup/redundant server. Thoughts?

Motherboard: ASRock ROMED8-2T/BCM
RAM: 512GB (220GB used by existing VMs)

Thanks in advance for any and or all guidance….

I see no “SAS controller” on board but two “Mini SAS HD” connectors (SFF-8643) wired to SATA lanes from the I/O die. It should work if cables to the external SATA shelf are short enough and if the host does not use SATA. Lots of “if”.

right… it’s not a SAS controller per se. thanks for the correction.

Considering my existing TrueNAS server is using an LSI HBA, and working rock solid thus far, to save myself from the agony of encountering “if”s, I will go ahead and buy a dedicated HBA and take it from there. Thanks for pointing out the “if”s…. Cheers!

Be sure to black list the SAS HBA so Proxmox does not attempt any function with any attached disks.

Proxmox understands ZFS, so if both Proxmox and TrueNAS VM import the pool at the same time, consider your pool corrupt beyond repair, and needing a full restore. (Well, in your case, a full backup from the prod server…)
