Backup Server Question?

So I have some old hardware and was wondering what everyone thinks would be a better setup.

#1 E3-1241 v3 with 32gb of DDR3 ECC ram.

#2 9700k or 9900k with 32gb of DDR4 non ECC ram.

It’s going to be installed in a brand new Jonsbo N4 that I got from marketplace for $50. It’s going to be an offsite backup. What’s the general consensus? Thanks in advance for any and all community opinions and advice.

I would go with the ECC setup.

Performance wise, I don’t think you will be able to see a difference.

Your use case matters. If only being used as an offsite NAS, then the E3-1431 and ECC RAM. However it you have a lot of apps that need to run, the other system may be preferable.

Personally I would use ECC RAM as I suspect you want your data as reliable as possible. Remember, while ZFS protects the data written, the ECC RAM protects the data in transition outside of the drive. If you flip a few bits and record it, ZFS will ensure the data, even if incorrect, is preserved as written.
