Does your DNS choice affect TrueNAS app installs and Docker pulls?

Had some catalog sync issues recently and it got me thinking about whether my DNS setup is partly to blame. Currently using my ISP default DNS on the TrueNAS box which is probably not ideal.

For those running apps and Docker containers on TrueNAS — does changing your DNS to something like Cloudflare or Quad9 actually make a noticeable difference for pulling images and syncing catalogs? I’ve seen some people say their container pulls got noticeably faster after switching.

More broadly — is there a way to figure out which public DNS server is actually the quickest and most reliable from where you are? I keep seeing the same “just use 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8” advice everywhere but that can’t be the best answer for every location.

I use QUAD9 for all outbound encrypted DNS queries.

iXsystems uses https://www.storj.io to host TrueNAS updates, which is also known to be a source of malicious software, thus occasionally gets flagged by QUAD9.
