Help me pick hardware for a 25GbE 12 bay (minimum) Truenas for video editing

Hi all.

After 8 years using QNAP and Synology, I am finally ready to dip my toes into building a Truenas system. I have previously built gaming PCs back in the day, but I am rusty, and so I am a bit lost in trying to decide how to go about this.
I have searched youtube, google, reddit, this forum, etc. for build recipes but it’s either for small 2-6 bay NAS or the really big enterprise level ones.
I hope this forum can help me with a “grocery list” for a system that checks off these boxes:

  1. minimum 12 drive bays (not necessarily hot swap) and max 20 bays.
  2. 25GbE network connection
  3. capable of serving 3-6 video editing workstations (not sure what that means in terms of what CPU/RAM is needed)

I don’t care what kind of chassis (tower, rack, etc.) and if there are off the shelves options that work well with Truenas and are simple to get up and running I am all in.

Thx for you help!

What country are you in?

What is your budget ?
Do you already have a system in place now ?

Video editing usually calles for a high IOPS capable system. This means lots of usually mirrored drives or most likely SSDs or even NVMEs.

Maybe a hybrid approach would work. A NVME scratch space and then spinning discs for long term storage.

Well, I was aiming at approx $2500 excluding disks/ssd

This system would check all of your requirements but will be more like 5k€ or so.

Space for 12 data drives (6 can be NVME), 2 boot disks on the back, and plenty of power.

If you want to go the cheap route, you may consider this:

This is an old, used system that should still perform ok for your purpose, and for only 600€ it’s a bargain. I use these systems myself.
You will need to swap the raid controller witha HBA (drop in replacement)

and add this card for 1 or two M2. type B SATA SSDs as boot devices.

If you want NVME SSDs as data storage you need this
WANGCL 4 in 1 NVME PCIE Adapter M.2 M-Key auf PCIE 16x mit Montagehalterung für Desktop Motherboard Festplattenerweiterung: Amazon.de: Computer & Zubehör with M.2 NVME SSDs of your choice. You need to activate bifurcation support in the BIOS for that slot to make the x16 slot act as x4x4x4x4. You may add multiple of these cards.
The mainboard can’t boot from NVME, so you need something connected to one of the mainboard SATA ports (see the Delock card).
The machine has got 4 10G ethernets. For 25G Ethernet you need something like this:
Supermicro AOC-S25G-M2S Dual Port 25G SFP+ Mellanox CX-4 PCIe x8 Ethernet Networ | eBay
Excluding disks you should stay well below 1000€ for your system.
