I did it. I bought an SSD, the smallest I could get, and used it for the system.
It all went smoothly. I could recover the pool and actually have my data back, that’s relieving.
I think I’d better study a little more about the whole system.

Glad to hear it. It’s always a good idea to keep a configuration backup for these sorts of things so you can restore easily if need be (System → General → Manage Configuration → Download File).
I find TrueNAS has a bit of a steep initial learning curve but once you’ve wrapped your head around the basics the rest just comes to you as you have a play about with it.
