Hey everyome, this is my first post and had a quick and simple question. I would like to be able to Wake my computer over LAN. My motherboard support wake on pcie and im thinking about buying and installing a WAL pcie adapter.
From my knowledge WAL only works with computers in sleep mode. Im wondering if Truenas has the ability to sleep or if theres a good work around for this. I would like to be able to turn on my NAS remotely as i dont always need it on, sucking power. Any advice or suggestions to make this work would be awesome.
I don’t think there’s a good, tested and safe answer to your direct question. I haven’t really used WoL since I did helpdesk work like 7 or 8 years ago… so I might not be the best source.
Maybe others have invested in the software side of this more than I have, but I generally solve this problem in hardware.
I think you’ll find better success down this path by either buying a board with IPMI or looking into remote KVMs that are connected into the on/off switch like the PiKVM.
Because then, your host OS doesn’t matter.
As an aside:
I really like this new project
I am going to pre-order one of these I think. They make PoE PCIE ones which can power the board completely independently of the host. Thats pretty sick!
