Mini R Fan Noise

I’m running TrueNAS SCALE 25.10.3 - Goldeye on a TrueNAS Mini R in a home environment. The unit is in a living space and the fan noise is significant.

I’ve already tried adjusting fan thresholds via ipmitool to give the fans more headroom to spin down, and I can’t relocate the machine. I’m considering physical fan replacement with quieter aftermarket fans (Noctua being the obvious candidate), but I have a few questions before I go down that path:

  1. Has anyone done this on a Mini R specifically?
  2. What fan sizes does the Mini R use?
  3. After replacing fans, I’d expect the BMC to throw fit-check or under-speed alerts given the lower RPM range of quiet fans. Has anyone successfully re-tuned IPMI thresholds to match aftermarket fans without causing shutdown events or persistent alarms?

Any warranty/support implications from iXsystems I should know about?
Happy to provide sensor output or any other diagnostics if that helps. Appreciate any Mini-R-specific experience here — most of the threads I’ve found are about DIY Supermicro rack builds which are a somewhat different situation.

Thanks

No hands-on experience here but I would expect that the change voids warranty and, most critically, that quiet fans do NOT move enough air to properly cool HDDs in a 2U rack.

For low noise in a living space you may actually want to build a new NAS in a suitable case (meaning: consumer style, suited for large quiet fans), using as few HDDs as possible. Square pegs in round holes and all that.

Thanks, makes sense & that’s what I figured - this is a low priority item on my list, but thought it was worth asking.
