Hello, this is Paolo from Milano, my first post.
I would like to use my old i5 NUC (NUC5i5RYH) as a NAS, to backup data of my family.
There is room for 2 storages: 1 Sata 2.5 hdu, 1 M2 SSD
My idea would be to install eg:
1x 4TB sata
1x 4TB M2 SSD
boot from 16GB usb key
I know that there are infinite more sophisticated better solutions, but I would like to start recycling what already in my hands.
Is this a crazy idea or could work ?
Thanks to everybody
Would it work - probably. TN works on most machines that aren’t from the dark ages.
Is it a good idea - not really. Not for production. If however this is just to play and learn about TrueNAS then fill your boots.
Issues:
Boot from USB key - these are not long term reliable. Make sure you have a spare and a regular backup.
2a. I don’t know if you intend to mirror the 4TB drives or not - but you will get the performance of the HDD without the bonus of the M.2.
2b. If two separate pools, then you have no parity, no redundancy - so aren’t using the major strong point of ZFS
No expansion in most NUC’s (note that this model has two SATA ports)
This NUC has been designed with 2.5" HDD’s in mind. Almost all 2.5" HDD drives are SMR which is a bit of a “No No” when it comes to ZFS / RAID.
Basically for testing, fine. But for anything else, this is not a good idea
