On mobile devices, the content of the widget is not displayed on the start page. Instead, a list of widgets is displayed. The content of the widget appears after a tap on one of the lines. Furthermore, the selection of widgets is also limited.
This makes it difficult to get a quick overview of the status of the NAS. In addition, the bar at the bottom covers the content of some widgets.
The following adjustments would be desirable:
customisation of the widgets so that they are also displayed directly on the startscreen on mobile devices.
widgets for all main functions of TrueNAS (switching containers/VM on/off, adding users, displaying active processes, and so on)
Impact
By customising the layout, every user is offered a much quicker overview of the status of the NAS. Certain tasks that can be solved via the widgets are also significantly shortened, as you do not have to click through the menus first.
User Story
As a user, I would like to get an overview of the status of the NAS immediately after logging in to the Nas so that I don’t have to gather this information with lots of clicks.
As a user, I also want to be able to perform routine tasks as efficiently as possible via the widgets so that I don’t have to click through the menus first.
Let me provide some context first. We have a dashboard overhaul coming as part of the next release Electric Eel. To summarize, we’re augmenting configuration options and general flexibility for widgets in the form of widget groups. For a more detailed explanation, I can direct you to some wireframes we posted when we were in the design phase of this feature. They can still be viewed on Github Discussions.

WRT dashboard layout on mobile. With the new EE dashboard implementation, the widgets will remain as independent cards on narrower screens. Which means users will see their dashboard configurations instead of the current alternative mobile layout.

This one has many implications, but we’ll take it under consideration.
If you have the means to do it, please consider testing out the dashboard progress via our nightlies. If you are interested in testing, make sure you do it on a non critical testing system as we are in the middle of implementation right now. There will be some bugs. With that said, we hope you like the new dashboard customization features and that the new mobile layout strategy will suit your needs.
Just in case you haven’t had a chance to test drive the latest nightlies. This is what the dashboard can look like with the new widget groups. I just did my best to fill up the page, this is not the default config.
I included one desktop image and a few mobile views so you can see how they relate.
