Question hdd

If a 2.5" HDD is placed very close (2 cm or 3 cm) to a large, switched-off 29" CRT TV, could this TV, due to its large and powerful magnets and coils, cause some degradation in the HDD’s magnetism, leading to data loss or corruption and magnetic degradation?

First of all, welcome to the community.

My opinion: No, I don’t see how that could happen.

Why:

  1. If the TV is OFF, there is no magnetic field being generated by the Yoke.
  2. If the TV is ON, the magnetic field is not that strong to affect an encased HDD.

You would have to place the HDD on top of the Yoke to maybe have an affect, however then your TV image would also be deflected so the image would not be so good. The HDD has very powerful magnets, a pair for the armature which is right next to the platters, and then the motor.

If this were a possible issue, I would expect to see warning labels about it.

Might I ask what this has to do with TrueNAS?

I read magnets and coils big CRT TV 29” IS strong and big, IS true?

Seagate and WD mentioned residual magnetic in CRT tv 29” Power off, IS true? Residual interference in HDD 2.5” degrad magnetic?

Ask yourself this… the gaming consoles that use to have hard drives in them, or DVRs with HDDs, all considered Set Top Boxes, are perfectly fine.

However it will be up to you to determine if this is a risk factor for you.

I’d love to see that reference.
