Samsung SM883 vs SM863 vs PM883

I’m looking to build a new pool with some enterprise ssds. This pool will be used for shared storage for my vms as well as nfs shares for my docker volumes. I plan to get 6 drives and set them up in 3 mirrored vdevs.

It seems like the SM883 drives cost more, they are newer and on newer technology.

Is it worth the extra money to go with the SM883 over either of the others for a homelab build?

Will the performance be noticable to the point where I would regret not just paying the extra cash for the newer drives?

FWIW, PM983 is usually cheaper (at least from my experience). And being NVMe, it has a better performance. The m.2 form factor runs hot, though. U.2 is ok.

So if you have pcie bifurcation on your mobo, you can consider them instead of SATA ones.

Define “performance”.

The main difference is the quality of the flash (MLC). So the SM series provide (even) higher durability.

It was difficult to find a mobo that fit my criteria and budget that had bifurcation, so I opted to go this route. I already have the hba, cables and icy dock on the way, Just need to pick the drives to use.

As far as performance, just overall snappyness, speed, and I want to keep iowait down.

I just have a feeling that going with the SM863 will be just fine, but wanted to see if anyone had any input on it.
