Setting up a new system

So I’m setting up a new system based on TrueNAS Core(Yes, I know. But I still prefer jails). My existing system has 6 drives and my new system has room for 12. My plan is to create a new pool consisting of 6 larger drives, connect all the old drives and import the pool, slowly but surely migrate all the data from the old pool to the new and then finally decommission all the old drives. I would then have 6 available drive slots to either create a new pool or extend the existing one over time. Is there anything in particular I need to consider with this approach?

It’s always good to see follow CORE users.

Alternatively, you could just replace your old drives.

At one point I was actually considering that, but since the drives are pretty old, I’m just scared that something happens If I replace the drives one by one and let it rebuild. The 750W PSU I bought for the Jonsbo N5 should be sufficient to power all the drives.

I don’t understand a thing: can you run both system at the same time? Because, if yes, a bit slower but safer way can be replicate data between the 2 system. With a config upload after process end you are probably fine with all settings (probably just need to reset network)

Why should having the two pools on different systems be safer than on a single system?

Only because in that case, disks shouldn’t be phisically moved

I have 750 W for 8 drives and 550 W for 8 drives caused problems. Not having done much deeper thinking I would personally feel uncomfortable. But I also have to admit that I am paranoid about my data and this is not a home lab but a business context.

Drives are not that fragile. Unless you drop them. But that’s @winnielinnie’s territory.

never understimate what old disks and bad luck can offer

but ok, i was over estimating risks a bit too much :grimacing:
