Setting up my first DIY NAS, i think I made a mistake

Hi, I’m really new to the NAS thing and am dipping my toes into creating a DIY system.

I installed it on an old laptop, found the UI and created a pool and was setting my safety features (2FA, IP restriction, etc) and I added the NAS IP on the IP restriction part and now I can’t access it from my laptop.

Is there a way to fix this from the laptop that has truenas installed? or will I have to reboot the system and start again?

Thank you =)

IP restriction means the IP addresses of the systems permitted to access your NAS.

If there is no data on the NAS, yet, best start over, i.e. reinstall.

thank you. I managed to reset the configurations without having to reinstall the whole system by using the interface on the laptop where it is installed. I had to re-do any of the settings i had previously done, but that was easy enough.

But in the end neither of the IP addresses i have for my laptop worked when i tried to add again. Do you have any tips on how to find the correct IP number to use? i tried various IP finding websites and they all gave the same number that didn’t work

ipconfig /all

if your Laptop is running Windows. But your laptop probably gets a dynamic IP address from your router via DHCP, so it’s prone to change in the future.

Why limit access in your local network at all? Do you have untrusted devices that share the network with your TrueNAS and your laptop? That’s generally a bad idea that cannot be addressed with such a simple IP address restriction. If you don’t - your router takes care your NAS is not exposed to the Internet.

HTH,

Honestly I was just trying to follow a set up guide I saw and that was one of the steps so I thought it was an extra layer of protection. Thanks for your help, I’ll skip this step now

Would you mind marking Patrick’s post as the solution? That way others see at a glance that the issue is solved (for you).
