Storage requirements

Minimum Storage required for installation of True Nas.

I’m a new user using an old PC as a server. Will be installing a SSD for the operating system and want to make sure that my storage capacity will be enough. I only have one HHD installed at present but will be installing a secondary HDD also. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I will refer you to the Documenation section. Switch it to the version you are using.

The documentation is not completely clear. But, I did see this:

The minimum size for a boot device in TrueNAS is not explicitly stated in the provided documentation. However, TrueNAS typically requires a boot device that can accommodate the operating system and its updates, which usually means at least an 8 GB device, with larger sizes recommended for better performance and future updates.

As a 16GB optane user, I claim that:

  1. 16GB is enough (for having 3-4ish boot environments).
  2. 8GB would probably cause update issues. 8GB is ~7.45GiB. 25.04.2.5 is about 3.17GiB. Usually, newer versions have a tendency to grow up in size. Plus there are some boot partitions. So having 2 boot environments on an 8GB drive may not be possible in the near future.

Plus, you’d have to do some research to find a SSD smaller than 16 GB…

If you’re really lucky when buying a new 2TB SSD you get one that only holds 16GB of unique data.

That document was I think originally a community submission in the pre-SCALE days and had been stagnant for a long time. It was recently rewritten for 26.

TrueNAS Hardware Guide | TrueNAS Documentation Hub now says:

The minimum recommended size for the TrueNAS boot volume is 20 GB, but a bigger boot device provides room for more boot environments.

@Arwen if you spot different sections that conflict, please give documentation Feedback directly or post examples so others can submit for changes.

No, I did a simple search and that paragraph was what it came up with. No conflict. Of course, looking at the search now, it was some lame AI thing right off;

So I guess I should not be surprised that it pulled out-dated information.
