System Hosed and need HELP!

I switched from a purchased NAS to a DIY NAS. I purchased a slightly older server to handle everything. I have been using TrueNAS Scale for about a year without issue. I would consider my knowledge level as a step above beginner in this area. I was running TrueNAS 25.04.2.5 and had TrueNAS 25.10-RC.1 as well. Everything was working fine until I wanted to get Nextcloud working so I could remotely access my files. Something changed during this process and not sure what or why.

I lost my SMB folders (not accessible) and the login screen went from admin to truenas_admin. I read about permissions and followed a step by step, but everything said that my data was under root and it wouldn’t allow me to change anything. These documents are both work and personal. I restored the admin settings to default, but that didn’t change my permissions. I then created a backup of my work and personal files on another pool which is a USB external drive. I thought maybe reinstalling everything from scratch would be the next step. Well, I downloaded the latest TrueNAS 25.04.2.5 and did the install. When I got to reboot system and remove usb install drive, I did that. Now it won’t boot into TrueNAS Scale. I get the following error message.

I have 2 immediate needs - how do I see my files on a Windows based system because I desperately need them? AND How do I fix what I have broken?

So I’ve been working on it all day. I have TrueNas Scale 25.04.2.5 reinstalled and functioning. The permissions are still all messed up. Based on community feedback, others have it as well. I just don’t know how to remedy this at the moment. Any help would be appreciated.

So I think my issue is that my dataset Unix permissions are wrong and not sure how to change them. User is root with full permissions; however, group is also root but has NO permisisons. Other also has no permissions. Any ideas???
