Ugreen Truenas Kodi and HDMI

Hi! Is it possible to have DXP8800 Ugreen nas with Truenas and have kodi running on nas and get hdmi out ?

Truenas has no video output, other than a text console.

You probably can run it in a VM with GPU passthrough. But i dont know if thats possible with a ugreen.

I have always been using qnap and synology nas, and there has never been any problem to use kodi. But sometimes i want something new, so i got an Ugreen nas . With ugos it is only possible to use Jellyfin or Theater if you want to use hdmi port. None of them have support for rar, iso or img. So i have to use Kodi. When i use kodi on qnap i can install app Qnap remote in my phone and use for remote control. So I guess it is impossible to make kode running on Ugreen nas, and get picture out of hdmi, and use phone as remote control. So my solution is probably to get a cheap qnap with hdmi again. I also know it is possible to buy a xiomi box for my tv and run kodi from there, but i dont want that. I want to use my nas for kodi. Let me know if you have any iseas for me  And i have not tried Truenas yet.

I’m still confused - why are you trying to get HDMI out on the NAS?

As far as TrueNAS goes, connecting to a monitor (using HDMI or anything else) is generally only done for either initial setup (if you don’t have IPMI), or for troubleshooting if something went seriously wrong (if you don’t have IPMI). Outside of those two situations the web GUI and SSH would basically give you full control of the system without ever having to physically touch it.

If you’re trying to access media content from TrueNAS then you can use Plex/Jellyfin/network share. Truenas doesn’t have a built-in video player, so connecting it to a screen to watch content would not provide any useful result.

You’d want TrueNAS to store the content & then feed it to devices on your network via your preferred docker/vm/fileshare solution. For example; you have your media content on your NAS, you’ve setup Plex on your NAS, you go to your TV, open the Plex app on your TV, then you can consume the media content that is stored on your NAS - no need for HDMI.

I feel like I’ve spent three paragraphs explaining that a NAS is Network Attached Storage.

I can see that you dont understand, but that is ok. Qnap Nas and Synology Nas have hdmi port for different things like, spotify, kodi, webbrowser ans some other things. You can also have video from an VM in hdmi port. I am looking for same function in UGREEN, and perhaps Truenas? Or maybee UNRAID ? I will not use Jellyfin or Plex or any other media app that kodi. And i explained the reason earlier. I know what NAS is .

You need to stick to Qnap or Synology and their OS. TrueNAS will not do everything you want. You might find a different OS that would work on Ugreen

Thanks i might buy a qnap again. I am still happy with UGREEN and its nice to try different OS.

Gotchya - that makes more sense now. Yeah, sadly TrueNAS won’t be what you want :frowning:
