Unsteady supply of renewed drives

In 2024 I purchased a few renewed 12-TB drives from Amazon. Those are now sold out. Amazon still carries other capacity models in the same line.

I am wondering, whether I can expect those 12-TB models to eventually become available again, or whether the supply now is generally exhausted, as Seagate has its manufacturing process under better control. Perhaps that’s the case, and they simply do not generate as many units that require rework, anymore.

By the way, I ran all of them through @dak180’s burn-in script. It took about 6 days for each drive mechanism. However, this gave the peace of mind from knowing that the drives were healthy and that I could expect them to be reliable.

The link you provided says I can order a drive and have it to my house in 1 week. Maybe it is where you live? I live in GA, USA.

I tried following the link on my iPhone, which brought me to the Amazon app. There a third-party seller offered them for $205. On my computer the picture is the same as at the time of the original post. Weird!

However, the point of the post was to get a handle on the general predictability of the availability of these kinds of drives. Having had a good experience with them so far, I want to be able to offer my clients NAS packages with these drives. They often want to pull the trigger only months later, and the quoted drives are either constrained or have disappeared altogether.

There are other used drive websites that offer a very good warranty. One place that has been mentioned here in the forums (and the old forums) was goharddrive.com but you should make your own decision on purchasing from any used drive location. A 5 year warranty is nice.

But always read other review comments, realizing most people only comment when bad things happen.
