How is save to update from Electric Eel to Goldeye , to skip Fangtooth ?
It’s generally not recommended to skip a major version in upgrade. Upgrade to the latest Fangtooth, then to the latest Goldeye.

Couldn’t the user - just export the configuration file from Electric Eel and do a clean install of goldeye (via usb or disk) and import configuration file.
Will it work? Probably. But it’s still not recommended to skip major versions.
I updated from 24.10.2.2 directly to 25.10.4 & it worked out for me; obviously not recommended as was mentioned by others.
You could always save your previous boot environment, back up config & test out the new version. I usually do that for 1-3 weeks before deleting old versions & updating ZFS version on my pools. At worst you can roll back (as long as you don’t upgrade the ZFS version on your pools), or do a clean-install.
Tangential question: Occasionally, as TrueNAS is going through major revisions, the pool has to be updated also - new parameters, etc. that then make it incompatible with older versions of TrueNAS.
I presume that the pool parameter updates have to be applied incrementally with each TrueNAS version upgrade also? Ie it likely wouldn’t be a great idea of trying to directly import a CORE 13.3 pool into 25.10?

As for pool updates - I recently came from CORE 13.3 and updated to 25.10.4. I had no problems with the pool from CORE 13.3 - I left it running until I felt the system was good - know I couldn’t go back once I did the update. When I upgraded 25.10.5 - I updated the pool.

Are you asking whether they need to be applied incrementally? If that’s the question, no, I wouldn’t think so. Of course, TrueNAS may implement some of those features (e.g., RAIDZ expansion, or vdev removal), and they’d have to be enabled on the pool before they could be used.
