WD Red 3TB Health Check

Are these HDD worth buying, I would like to use them in a low Use Home NAS.

Currently running three non NAS 1TB SATA Drives and one has failed. I have bought a 2TB WD Red, but am communicating with the seller of 6 x 3TB WD Red NAS Drives.

I asked if they had been SMART Tested and why they had been removed, this is the response:

“They were part of a decommissioned lot of servers, so they were destined for the bin while still running, will get the test figures for you”

“1 is refurbished with 0 hours, rest are 25-60k hours with a low power on count as they were used as NAS storage drives, so also a relatively low read/write value for WD Reds”

SMART Readouts are attached.

Any advice as to whether to buy these?

These drives are CMR however too high of hours. I have given drives like this away for free. The drive with zero hours, verify the warranty on the WD website. That would be the only one I’d consider. That is just me.

If there were $5 each, sure, it is worth the risk but if you can afford new drives or refurbished drives with a warranty, do that.

GoHardDrive is a respected place for used drives. They honor the warranty they state.

Hi,

I have looked on the WD Website for warranty details, for the drive with zero hours, but it needs the country of origin, which I do not have. https://support-en.wd.com/app/warrantystatusweb

Tried to put in a low offer of £10 per drive, seller counter offered with £17.50 per drive. I almost went for it but they wanted a Bank Transfer and this would mean I was unprotected should the sale fall through? I would have preferred PayPal.

I think you are being smart. I would still recommend not purchasing them. If you are building a NAS, all this will do is leave a bad taste in your mouth as the drives become unreliable and start failing. If this is considered an experiment, maybe it is worth the cost to you, but you would need to purchase good drives.

Best of luck to you.
