Why can't I get my volume to show up in Windows File Explorer?

I’ve just built the NAS and configured it to run a basic volume. It’s a 2x4TB mirror configuration connected to the network through a 25GBps NIC. I can access the web interface page just fine.

The problem is that when I go into the File Explorer on my Windows 11 laptop, under the Network heading, it shows a link saying ‘TRUENAS.’ If I click this, it freezes for a while, then tells me it can’t access the drive.

Meanwhile, if I ever the machine’s IP address (192.168.8.65) in the File Explorer address bar, it’ll access the volume I created just fine and I can put things in it. This appears under the Network heading in Explorer as ‘192.168.8.65.’ However, if I reset the laptop, this heading will be gone and I’ll have to re-enter the IP address to get access to it again.

I just want one heading that’s always present and works when I press it. What am I doing wrong? I’ve tried mapping the network drive and that doesn’t appear to work.

did you create a Dataset and an smb share to share out that datset?

Yes to both. It’s existing as a dataset for both drives called “storage-space.” A folder with this name is visible when I enter the IP address in File Explorer.

And did you also create an smb user in truenas and give that user permissions to the shared out datset?
