ZFS broke after upgrade to TrueNas 25?

Hey,

Unfortunately I updated from 24 to 25 without reading the release notes. Now my VMs have disappeared. I then moved the zvol disks instead of cloning via the instances UI. I then went back to the previous 24 version but couldn’t start the VM either as apparently something is wrong with the zvols.

I executed the following commands because I thought it might work to move them back:

usr/sbin/zfs rename Volume1/.ix-virt/custom/default_PBS-system Volume1/PBS/PBS-system

usr/sbin/zfs rename Volume1/.ix-virt/custom/default_PBS-data Volume1/PBS/PBS-data

This also worked but under /dev/zvol there is absolutely nothing left even after restarting.

I have noticed the following and am a little worried:

Contrary to the title…

  1. ZFS isn’t broken.
  2. It didn’t happens due to your upgrade to 25.04.

Its a PICNIC.

The good news is that your rename command did not screw up the pool.

Start with the following:

  • sudo zfs rename Volume1/PBS/PBS-system Volume1/.ix-virt/custom/default_PBS-system

  • sudo zfs rename Volume1/PBS/PBS-data Volume1/.ix-virt/custom/default_PBS-data

Then in the UI goto System / Boot and click the Activate button against 24.10.2.2. (Whilst on this screen, you can also take the opportunity to delete all versions earlier than this.) Then reboot and hopefully everything will be working again.

Now plan your upgrade to 25.04 more carefully - and since VMs are part of your system, make sure that the incomplete new Incus-based VM capability will meet your needs before attempting the upgrade again. If it is suitable for your needs, then you will need to plan ahead of time how to make your VMs workable again after the 25.04 upgrade - and if not then stick to 24.10.2.2 until it is.

Thanks for the reply. But if i rename to Volume1/.ix-virt/custom/default_PBS-data its on the wrong one because it was on Volume1/PBS/PBS-data on the 24 Version.

It was like this on the 24 system:

/dev/zvol/Volume 1/PBS/PBS-data

The problem is i moved in the UI to the new system instead of the clone, and then it was gone in /dev/zvol/Volume 1... and since then the /dev/zvol dir is gone also after i rename back to Volume1.

I simply took your commands and reversed them.

However, you are confusing file system paths with ZFS dataset names.

Each dataset can be mounted anywhere in the file system, and ix apps / virt datasets may not be mounted in the normal hierarchy.

Assuming that you can accurately describe:

  1. The old state - dataset names and their mount points
  2. The actions you mistakenly took
  3. The new state - dataset names and their mount points

then (mixing metaphors wildly) we should have the picture on the jigsaw box that would enable us to put humpty-dumpty back together again.

But right now, from the description you have provided, I am struggling to create a picture in my mind of what has happened, and I am not sure I can help you further until I can see the full details in a digestable form.
