Building a new TrueNAS server: advice welcome!

As for RAM, I got two of these. Anyone had any bad experience with Samsung chips?

DDR5? Random text because apparently I cannot post only the question. Long live XenForo.

Can you please post a link to the motherboard you are buying then?

Oh my bad, I was looking for a 500$ price tag and did not realize Amazon was showing me the total price, including 200$ of customs that you don’t have.

I do not see any Samsung RAM in the QVL, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work. Iirc, Samsung had a few issues with the First batches of DDR5 but now things shouldn have been fixed.

Well, it’s ~$500 for the second-hand “version.” (I can’t afford $800 for a new one! :slightly_smiling_face: )

The big question now is if it can fit inside this (… what with being Deep uATX and all …). I guess I will just have to actually try that in the flesh, as there’s no way of telling otherwise.

As for a heatsink for the Epyc 9124 (TDP 200W) I went with a passive one (rated TDP 260W). Should I have gone with an active cooling solution (rated TDP 400W)?

Again, I do not envision major non-data storage stress.

The passive ones are to be used only in a server case with its jet turbine like fans.

I suggest something from Noctua.

Definitely an active Noctua cooler!
And you have to decide on the airflow:

  • Full front-to-back with a 4U cooler blowing to to exhaust fan—probably best model for M.2/U.2 drives on PCIe carrier cards—; or
  • A NH-U12/U14 blowing to the top exhaust—quieter, more powerful cooler, but intake could be an issue if PCIe cards get in the way, and you may find that the back fan is best removed so as not to interfere with the cooler.

I couldn’t find any Noctuas for SP5 socket, I’m afraid. Feel free to point me to it if you see any.

I ended up ordering this one. Fingers crossed.

Love how in the description is called a “4U Passive CPU Heat Sink”. Do note that it will be noisy.

Maybe I can replace the fan with a less noisy one?

Yes, but a quieter fan may not push enough air for the heatsink…

Must admit I was surprised when you said you’d found a passive cooler that supports a 260W TDP.

They’re normally massive…

And top out at 95w

That 1u “passive” cooler requires extreme airflow to be directored through it.

The Supermicro cooler will work… airflow should also be directed front to back across it, it will probably be loud, perhaps there is a “super quiet” version

It appears Noctua does not have an SP5 cooler.

I did find some others, but at the end of the day it’s a big socket with a pretty high TDP.

Interested in how this works out for you. I think my next “big” server will be Epyc like this too.

If being quiet is a requirement, an AIO may be the only option.

Someone recommended this one: it apparently won some award for being silent.

Trouble is, it ships from China, and I am too impatient to wait another 2 weeks.

PSU time: please tell me this should be good enough!
