I run into the same problem, I use external USB disks encrypted with LUKS for data transfer and offline backups. Luckily, I had a Raspberry Pi 4 laying around which is capable of doing LUKS disk encryption and serve as a NFS server.

Subject: One year without TrueNAS – an update
Hello everyone,
About a year ago, I stepped away from TrueNAS. Time for a quick update – maybe it’s useful for someone in a similar situation.
Why I left:
Over time, TrueNAS removed several features without prior notice or clear reasoning. When I raised questions in the forum, the typical response was often: “I’m sure the developers had their reasons.” Fair enough – but for me personally, that wasn’t a solid foundation for a storage platform.
What I’m using now:
I migrated to Proxmox. To be clear: it’s not a direct comparison. TrueNAS is primarily a NAS solution, Proxmox is a virtualization platform. But if you’re willing to invest some time, it offers a stable and flexible environment:
- Cluster support
- ZFS (running smoothly)
- LUKS for encryption
- Optionally Ceph for distributed storage
It’s not about “better” or “worse” – just a different approach. One that works well for me.
I won’t be active in TrueNAS forums for now – unless there are genuinely relevant developments worth discussing.
Hope your systems are running reliably.
Best regards
