Never had to do this, not even once for over 20 apps. From another poster, it appears those using the UI version of custom apps (install ix app screen) do not receive updates as you say, but those using yaml do, I always do. Only one data point though.
Have you seen my post on how I do it? That’s one way to use the feature and avoid an extra app.
