Hi yes, I should have said 2 different pools not vdev.
But in end I think I will stay with a single raidz2 8x6TB. Not needed to complicated it to much.
Once its full I would “borrow” a LSI HBA controller to start over with 4 new bigger drives.
This weekend I had time for some testing.
I am sharing this in case anyone else is building this in the future.
I am now using the Asrock x570M pro4 as the Taichi run in a technical issue.
This board has better pcle bifurcation support anyway.
The ecc memory is working and I am considering to return it as I don’t need it yet. I just wanted to have the option to upgrade later.

I did also measure the power usage; with 5 HDD its just 25 watt in idle.
This is with all 4 NVME and adaptor cards.
Without the HDD its 20 watt in idle C6 (mislabeled as C3).
I was worried about the chipset idle power but I am happy with the results.
I also bought 2 Patriot P300 M.2 PCIe Gen 3x4 128 GB SSD with GLOTRENDS PA09-X1 M.2 NVMe to PCIe X1 Adapter for the dual boot.
The Kingston NV3 NVMe PCIe 4.0 500gb is now in mirror pool for Apps/vm instead.
Heyo. Saw you did a build and in the end would have been the same goals you have.
Currently having small nuc nas, however planning on upgrading. Question is how do you like AMD gpu for transcoding? did you have some issues, passthrough, jellyfin/plex/immich issues? Most of the movies i have are in 4k mkv which are remuxed and afaik it is non taxing at all on the system. Direct streaming is also afaik is not heavy task.
I am torn between 9th gen intel and your amd cpu.
Hey, I have only installed immich last week and that is running great so far. The cpu is around 40 degree with passive cooling. It could playback small clips I made with my phone. Load is maybe 3% max. I wanted to install jellyfin but I could make some time this week hopefully.
The only thing I would maybe change is taking the fractal case 804 instead for when I want to put it closer to the router for external access in the future.
Hey, I had some time to test this yesterday.
Good news this is working but you will need to use all 6 CPU cores. Otherwise you still get a little bit of shuttering. CPU utilization goes up to 50% and temp increase to 50 degree.
I have tested this with Ballerina.2025.2160p.4K.WEB.x265.10bit.AAC5.1-[YTS.MX]
MKV file 5.5 GB. From the log “FFmpeg.Transcode” log I understand that transcoding is happening of the 4K HEVC Dolby Vision Profile 8.1 (HDR10) file. I am new to this but it seems to be using the codec HEVC to my 2K monitor. According to AI the difference between 2K and 4K monitor should not be problem? Dont mind the uptime of the screenshot I am installing some smart switches atm.
Why not iGPU for transcode? Curious to see what kind of quality you would get
I think this is with the iGPU, I selected the following. When I am home again I can verify also via the CLI and let you known. When I forgot to select GPU configuration> passthrough available (non nivdia) GPUs. it was not working and had a critical error and shuttering. So I guess that would indicate that transcoding via iGPU is active? I followed the youtube guide from Serverathome for the installation. The config/cache dataset is on the nvme drive. I kept most default settings.
ah ok, yeah should be it then. i guess i expected almost no cpu usage, but that my lack of knowledge i guess. since subs and sound is still on cpu side
I dont know how many other services you are running but I could find the AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 4750G on ebay for around 135 euro before shipping.
overall have like 20 containers. but they are not cpu heavy, was simply thinking about future and maybe to scale something like mc server for friends. Tho i might go intel 9th gen way and grab it from used market at Facebook for sub 50 Eur. Less gambling with return if cpu is vendor locked. There is one mb for gen8/gen9 from china that also supports ECC in case i will need it.
