You’ve clearly only watched a video or two then, and missed the many videos where he and others do dispense solid information.
For example, here’s a video where he and his staff tested a $1000 worth of HDMI cables and, unlike a lot of the “advice” found in this forum that uses vague words like “adequate” and “substantial,” uses actual data from industry standard testing equipment to explain how HDMI cables work and why some are better than others–including what “better” means.
Unless I’ve missed it, they never lost any data from a TrueNAS system.
When they lost data it was a GlusterFS platform running on CentOS with ZFS as the filesystem, they configured ZFS in house for the most part. Unlike TrueNAS it didn’t have pre-configured scrubs since it was a ‘from scratch’ configuration of ZFS, which they didn’t realise. Their video on the recovery goes over how and why happened (they’re effectively a startup with no dedicated IT person and like all businesses have had growing pains).
They’re an entertainment tech review channel and are firmly in the prosumer/enthusiast space. They repeatedly say they do things the way they do because it allows them to make content about technology that’s entertaining (even if it’s not aligned with your entertainment preferences or follows best practice).
Check the LTT Labs website (beta) and look at the data provided in their power supply reviews. Then go look at any other mainstream tech review of that same power supply.
They’re providing a wealth of additional data about products that other reviewers don’t, all because it’ll give them better data to put into their videos and so consumers can be better informed with their purchasing decisions.
You don’t have to like him or his content, but to insist that everything he is even remotely linked to is now unclean is a weird stance to take.
Apparently half of the F500 companies are iX customers/use TrueNAS in some form. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re the same F500 companies who sponsor LTT, so not sure why you’re so concerned about the reputation of iX being damaged.
And yet… Drilling a hole in a motherboard and acting surprised that such an action killed it. How can an organization like that be taken seriously?
You can’t cherry-pick “oh that was humor” and “oh, that was technical advice” because it’s all delivered together. Think “bad potato chip sorter”, the potato chip factory sorts out the crap before it’s packaged, never mind delivered, so that only products that meet their quality standard are shipped.
How many videos do I need to watch that feature him drilling a hole in a motherboard and acting surprised it doesn’t work any more? If he’s going to do that even once, he isn’t a reliable source of information. And his channel is Linus Tech Tips, not Linus Tech Entertainment.
Fine, I’ll take your word that he does some stuff that isn’t idiotic. That doesn’t do anything about the stuff that is.
It was a FreeNAS system, several years ago.
“Funded by Linus” features very prominently in the press for HexOS, nearly as much as “Powered by TrueNAS” and perhaps more so–just look at the OP in this very topic. Some of the press goes so far as to say things like “Linus is making a NAS”–incorrectly, fine, but this is the impression people are getting. Linus isn’t merely a tangential figure with respect to HexOS, he’s pretty much the central figure. This isn’t something “he’s remotely linked to;” this is in a very real sense his project.
But surely he has some say in what they’re doing with his money–he’s not just saying “here’s $1M, go do something with it.” The questions would be how much control he has, and how he’s exercising it.
