IMO, rules of thumb are there to guide and to advise people of the risks if they decide not to follow them.
So long as people understand why its a bad idea and accept the risks (and live with the consequences if it all goes wrong afterwards - and don’t then come here asking for a fix), then every individual is free to make their own decisions.
Absolutely, but what you described is not the “It’s me that’s playing by the books, what you are saying is not true” that’s happening here, which has to be addressed.
