LTT DOES NOT fork TrueNAS

Hummm…

I’ve got some ideas racing around in my head at the moment. I’ll have to dig out one of my books and see if I can make one solid coherent thought.

I will be glad to see a new NAS OS release. More players make the game more interesting. However, I prefer a real enterprise-level implementation to a home/toy level.

TrueNAS SCALE should make more breakthroughs such as RDMA support.

Moreover, I prefer using the command line to deal with the ZFS jobs.

I am trying to build a more modern Debian release specialized in storage.

  • ksmbd RDMA/RoCE storage access support
  • NFSv4 ACL support
  • modern GUI

Not many comments here were close to guessing the concept… so this might be accurate.

Just to be clear… no forks, spoons or knives involved. Pool layouts are simpler for smaller systems. Current and future (Docker) Apps work. (the API is consistent)

It’s not for people who understand how to administer a TrueNAS system. More will be revealed…

Should preface I do use consumer hardware, but I find enjoyment in things breaking and wouldn’t suggest it to others.

From their website:

So it looks like rather than just the GUI inviting people to use unsuitable hardware, they’re directly advertising it!

This is not what I tought of as “unsuitable” hardware. It is a current gaming PC (X670E, gaming GPU) that is ridiculously overpowered and overpriced for home server duties. It lacks some server niceties (real ECC, IPMI). But 32 GB and SATA ports from the chipset should be a sound basis.

Now bring in some x1 SATA card with port multipliers…

I’d personally consider a gaming machine unsuitable primarily for the reasons you mention (don’t peek at my hardware please :stuck_out_tongue:), but I do get what you mean, it’s enough. I have a little bias against ASUS gaming motherboards on Linux as my board has no real support, can’t even read the temp sensors.

My inclination here is that if someone wants a NAS, they aren’t typically going to go out and buy the latest and greatest of consumer hardware. I can’t think of too many use-cases where you would justify the price of brand new components for a storage appliance, even with applications.

Naturally as well if you’re inviting people with the idea of repurposing gaming machines, or even just old desktops in general, you’re going to get people using things like those m.2 format port multipliers. Because it’s Linux, it must work with everything!! Seems like a slippery slope to data-loss.

Remember that what’s “unsuitable” for one user might be “fine” for another.

I wonder where HexOS will draw the line, how much advice do the devs aim to give to users when they are using unsuitable/risky equipment or settings?

How will they deal with SMR drives, hardware raid or users wanting to use a single 16x wide 22TB RAIDZ1?
What about ECC, USB-enclosures, and things like spinning down drives?
Some of these matter more than others.

I sincerely wish them the best of luck dealing with that chaos, I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes.

This could not be more true. I stopped watching LTT after their ridiculously scripted “touchy-feely” apology tour. Linus is no expert. He has a screen presence that draws people in, but he’s ultimately after the sponsorships, the money, and product sales. This NAS product offering is just another example of that. If it ends up going south, my only concern is for the people who get sucked into it.

For me, it was his video on building a pfSense router where he drilled a hole in a motherboard because it didn’t fit the chassis mount points, and then acted surprised that it didn’t work. Maybe he isn’t actually that dumb, but does it really matter at that point?

To me, the bigger question is what is the point and how will it get financed over the long haul?

If it goes badly (as I expect it will) are folk going to be able to import their pools into other ZFS packages? I sure hope so.

Since there shouldn’t in theory be significant backend changes from default TrueNAS, I don’t think there would be any issue with simply import the pool in TrueNAS SCALE of appropriate version.

You iX folks clearly know more than you’re telling. Can you maybe drop the mystery?

Lot of things are supposed to be simple. :grinning:

Your tireless work re getting Time Machine and like processes to work as intended is a monument to the difference between supposed and actual. Especially if things are as badly documented as Apple File System / Network stacks.

Even something as simple as a side grade from CORE to SCALE has potential minefields unless the installation was plain vanilla, featured no jails, and operated solely as a file server.

Thanks to numerous backups, I consider rebuilding a pool now less work than recreating a file server with its users, tasks, certificates, and so on. There is a lot of time, lost hair, etc in them configuration files.

THis one, I can fully confirm!
My first attempt was an Intel Atom D510 MoBo with 6x4TB external WD HDD.
The array was fallen apart like every 2-3 days.
Then I moved it all to a 4th gen i3 CPU and an IBM 1015 HBA int a 8HDD bay 2U tall server. SInce then I only had actual HDD death once.

He actually does have diagnosed ADHD which he’s talked openly about in past videos and how it affects the way he works, but he also does have his ‘entertainment persona’ for the camera as well.

I don’t take the things he says or do seriously, but I don’t mind watching his content on occasion.

The ADHD doesn’t explain why he’s treated some of his employees as well as some of the folk whose products he allegedly reviewed like dirt.

Like Mr. Beast and the rest of the YouTube crowd, he’s always looking for a hook to reel people / eyeballs with. It’s worked for him and sometimes he’s even honest about his shortcomings such as not configuring a NAS correctly.

The signal to noise ratio on that channel is frequently quite disappointing especially when he tries to pass himself off as some sort of authority on a subject he clearly has little more than a passing knowledge about.

Then again, there are informational episodes, such as the time his organization got hacked. But all in all, it is a channel I avoid because there are so many good alternatives like the network berg, Lawrence systems, @stux, and like luminaries.

Here we go with the regular people making big claims:

“many things that are far superior in BSD than linux”.

By many, you mean more than 5 superior things in BSD than Linux?

Like which specific five?
I’m here to learn…so, teach me.

Don’t go creating fear without any base:

If ZFS is a standard, why would people using any other standard ZFS system, NOT be able to import their pools in any other standard ZFS system?

You summarized what I was about to reply!

Interesting. Many people have ADHD, but regardless, I’'m after new knowledge.

If I wanted to use my time for pure entertainment, I would not waste my time with any super-produced show or, really, ANY heavily “commercially” inclined channel…
