SMART errors exploding all of a sudden

So I was mucking about the case earlier today and now my SMART errors have exploded. It’s likely unconnected but to have two drives start to increase their error count significantly is concerning to me… da2 is a standard He10 in the VDEV, da6 is a sVDEV S3610 Intel SSD. What should I try next?

Here is the LSI 2116 HBA data:

The HDD has a bunch of CRC errors, so some sort of cabling issue is likely. As for the SSD, what’s bothering you, specifically? It’s hard to really interpret much as-is, but perhaps the latest version of the drive DB can help. The update-smart-drivedb helper script should take care of things.

I started two SMART long tests on both drives, neither of which is finished yet. I’m getting all sorts of CAM status: SCSI status error for both drives now, 240 for the He10 in an hour. Curiously, it was well after I had last opened the case to look into fan connectors for Stux’s excellent fan script.

I can certainly substitute a new cable for the extant one. I wonder if somehow jiggling it as part of the fan’s work caused a connection to become less than solid.

As @ericloewe said, the SSD looks fine, don’t let the numbers not being a zero value make you think there is a problem. The HDD still looks to have a likely data cable issue.

The SMART Long test will not create UDMA CRC errors, and the test time is forever at 18.46 hours (with no activity).

As crazy as it sounds, data cables can just fail. I thought everyone was crazy until it happened to me. Never touched the machine and one day I started getting a lot of these errors. I replaced the SATA cable with a better quality one.

As for the fan causing it, your guess is as good as mine. If the problem continues, swap the data cable between another drive (the drive end if possible), see if the problem moves or stay.

Good luck, hope that fixes it.

I’ve been trying to buy quality cables but who knows what I actually got. Just because it says SuperMicro on the outside, doesn’t mean it’s SuperMicro on the inside!

Whose cables do you recommend and thanks to everyone (Eric, Joe!) for your insights!

Honestly, with SATA the trick is mostly to keep them as short as physically possible.

They’re all pretty short but I am going to take the extra step of moving the fan wires away as far as possible from anything SATA and tie them down also.

Perhaps my rig will be considered more polished and less Ghetto then?

They say elegance is sleaze you get away with. The same applies to computers.

10GTek SFF to SATA cables look decent enough? I bought a couple. I’ll install them tomorrow, reroute some of the SATA / Fan power cables away from them.

In the meantime, my rig is super quiet thanks to the efforts of Mr. @Stux, @joeschmuck, and others. The multi-zone script is running beautifully now that I replugged a few fans to ensure the script is getting good 4th pin feedback. Quite quiet in comparison. I doubt it will have a significant impact on power but the fan rule is what it is.

The HDDs likely are complaining now that their default temperature is no longer 28C but rather 35C. C’est la guerre. I guess I could change the setpoint down a bit, if I felt strongly about the issue.

Well, they seem inoffensive, which is about the extent one can wish for with SATA.

Re UDMA CRC errors, I would start by unplugging replugging all ends.

Then just replace cables.

Also ensure power plugs are fully seated. At all ends.

(And just imagine if this had been your boot ssd ;))

In the military we used waxed lacing tape to bundle cabling together and make it also look very professional. While I can obtain a roll of this stuff, and it would clean up my old TrueNAS machine (the new one being all M.2 NVMe drives), removing the lacing tape can be a pain when all you want to do is replace one wire or cable in the bundle. I think a good alternate item is the wire loom, the stuff that looks like a stocking, not the hard plastic type.

That is a very nice feeling to have.

I hope the new SATA cable fixes the problem.

Part of it likely is just keeping all power lines at right angles to the high speed stuff and at a maximum distance. I will use separate cutouts in the case for the SATA lines vs. power. Hopefully that will help keep interference via induction, etc. to a minimum.

At the moment, @Stux excellent script is keeping the CPU fan quite quiet all while the 32*C maximum HDD temperature is ensuring that the front of the house is spinning at a higher RPM.

[Edited in a correction to give proper credit, see below]

That is not in Multi-Report (the only script I’m working on actively), maybe in some other script? So long as you are a happy camper, all it good.

As I understand it, you also had a hand in the development of the fan speed script. Maybe @stux perfected it but you kicked it off way back when? Either way, the two scripts are now running in adjacent tmux sessions.

Edit: some the above is incorrect but I have no strikethrough font choice. See correction below.

I can’t remember what I ate for lunch yesterday so I may have, I’ve been around these parts ever since iXsystems bought FreeNAS and I did create some scripts (mainly for myself) but I shared them freely. But now I want to take a stab at creating an Android App. I’ve found many like what I want but it always seems to be missing one key part, the option to email a person with a notification. I need to look into Android apps, might be an interesting adventure. But first I need to look harder, there might be an app out there and I just haven’t found it yet.

My script was based on research etc by @khorton

Who then based his PID version on my script

We all give each other people ideas and hope we can produce a script that does exactly what we want. It doesn’t always go as planned.

I didn’t think I had anything to do with that fan control script. I know I dabbled in it but I prefer to run my fans from 7VDC and design proper air flow into the project, hence me cutting up cases.

Kevin and @Stux did a wonderful job with that script, many people are thankful.

Apologies for getting it wrong. I must have been looking at the multi report too much while I was enjoying the fan script results. Thank you again for writing it.
