I mean, it’s highlighted in blue. There are real issues, still, but the reply button is not one of them.
I understand this is not exactly a new thread, but good grief, these new forums are terrible.
Navigation is not anywhere near intuitive. There seems to be no logical structure to the new forums, something the old ones managed very well.
Finding information is incredibly time consuming. The solution being pushed is to leverage “tags”, an optional field in the post. Everything is “General Discussion” now.
I get that things change, but I genuinely cannot see the positive in this one. The old forums functioned fantastically. I understand the backend may have been more cumbersome for the staff, but when you have a company that is customer facing and seeks community engagement, you sometimes have to sacrifice backend efficiency for customer service. Ya’ll literally did a Leroy Jenkins in the opposite direction.
Actually “General Discussion” is a “Muted Category” so that the poor souls who post there are simply not found and their questions remains unanswered. Rather, everything goes into “TrueNAS General” even when not related to TrueNAS.
Terrible interface, and terrible structure. But I’m afraid that, as for the switch from FreeBSD to Linux, that ship has sailed—from the Belfast shipyards towards North America… mind icebergs.
It’s immeasurably better than the old one.
I’d prefer there be no default category (and the user be forced to choose one), but as defaults go, it could be worse.
You got me on a technicality. I really meant that “TrueNAS General” is essentially a “General Discussion” hole where most everything lands. I’ll be more specific next time
But you make my point if you had NOT noticed that there literally is a “General Discussion” category that is hidden from immediate view…
It’s not a structure issue but a managing issue.
It was an April Fools joke that was taken too far…
To cut to the chase, this new Forum just makes me want to cry.
And not engage. Except desperately, and in desperation (only).
Classic example of the tech folk maxim “If it ain’t broke, fix it till it is”.
I miss being able to hover over someone’s icon / name and get when they joined the forum, plus post count. This helps me understand if they are a newbie or long time user.
If experienced, I might be brief and say, “Yep, do A, B & C”.
However, if a new user, I might be more verbose with my answer or maybe ask a question. (Or possibly not answer immediately and see what others may suggest…)
you can still click on the persons icon and get at least some of those stats…
I hated the forum change initially. I’ve been using forums for most of my life, but it was the first time I’ve used Discourse.
Now that some time has passed and I know where all the buttons are and how to do what I want to do, I don’t mind it at all. I’m not sure if I prefer it, but I can’t think of anything I miss about the old ones.
I’ve accepted I’ve reached my ‘old man yelling at clouds’ point at life, and that I need to give changes some time before I start yelling.
