905P Optane Not Showing on Older MB (X8DT6-F)

Hello,

I’m trying to get two 1.5TB 905p Optane SSDs working as data disks in TrueNAS Scale. I suspect my issue is due to my older motherboard. I can’t find anyone commenting on using these with a Tylersburg chipset.

Would love any tips from this community. Figured worst case this might help someone else trying to mix new with old.

TrueNAS version: Dragonfish-24.04.2
Motherboard: X8DT6-F
RAM: 12x16GB DDR3 1333MT/S ECC
CPU: 2x Intel X5690
NIC: Intel X540-2 10gbps (only 1 NIC in use) in PCIe slot 7
Disks currently recognized include 4x patriot burst elite SSDs, 20 4TB enterprise HDDs [10 WD40EFRX, 6 WD40EZRX, and a 4 other miscellaneous), and 2 500gb HDDs I don’t plan to use which were buried in the chassis by the prior owner and aren’t worth trying to remove.
Chassis is a Supermicro 847 with 36 drive bays (24 front, 12 rear).
Controllers: 9211-8i in PCIe Slot 5, currently running version 20 IT mode. Front and rear backplanes are connected to this controller.
The Motherboard’s built-in SAS controller is on version 7, non-IT mode and as far as I can tell is not in use(?)

Current Status:
No indication in BIOS that the 905p are seen. This is an older BIOS though so I’m not sure it would tell me anyways. Of course, no sign of them in TrueNAS Scale either.

What I’ve Tried:

  • Updated BIOS to latest version 2.2 published 7/9/2018
  • Disabled OPROM on all PCIe slots except slot 5 (it is required by the HBA)
  • Set SATA Controller to AHCI (originally IDE).
  • Set ACPI to v3.0 (from v2.0)
  • Booted to live Ubuntu 24.04 via USB. Tried to find disk with GParted, unsuccessfully.

lspci and fdisk -l results do not indicate the 905p and are copied below for reference.

To connect the 905p SSDs, I used this adaptor cable
to this PCIe adaptor card to the motherboard PCIe slots 6 and 3 as labeled on the motherboard manual.

I do not have anything plugged into the SATA power portion of the adaptor cable. My understanding is that these SSDs should draw sufficient power from the PCIe slot.

Plug in SATA power. The cable carries only data, not power.

Thank you, I will try this. It will take me some time, as I will need to partially disassemble the chassis to access a power source, as well as find an appropriate power cable. I will circle back with results.

This worked. I simply used a different adaptor, which carries both 12v power and data to/from the pcie slot. (Won’t let me link here from Amazon… the adaptor is not of a very high quality but is working so far, good thing I have redundancy). I feel very silly. Thank you very much for your help, etorix.

Nope, the chain of adaptors you’re using does not carry power from the PCIe slot to the disk. You must plug in the SATA power cable part.
