About the Feature Requests category - README First

This is the place to suggest improvements and feature functionality to be considered for addition to the TrueNAS development roadmap.

Please note that bug reports - existing features that aren’t working correctly - should still be submitted through the “Report a Bug” functionality at the top of the forum, or directly through the webUI (in 24.04 and later)

Topics in this category will include a “Voting” option. Each forum user has a limited number of votes that can be cast for items at any given time. The higher your forum’s Trust Level, the more votes you can cast. The number of votes based on Trust Level is as follows:

Trust Level 0 - 2 Votes
Trust Level 1 - 4 Votes
Trust Level 2 - 6 Votes
Trust Level 3 - 8 Votes
Trust Level 4 - 10 Votes

Votes on a topic are kept until either you remove the vote manually, or the topic is closed. Topics will be closed periodically as they are reviewed and either accepted or rejected based on their merit and feasibility.

What is a good feature request?

Before creating a new feature request, it is important to take some time to think through the implementation and user story. A good feature request will include details about the functionality being added, and if there is a UI component, a detailed user story about how a TrueNAS user might interact with the said feature.

What is a bad feature request?

Items which are flat out unrealistic (I.E. Can you base TrueNAS on Windows) or feature requests which are not well within the scope of typical NAS functionality. (I.E. I want a full desktop with Gnome on TrueNAS).

Note that unless you’re submitting a feature request on behalf of someone else, you’ll want to remember to vote for your own feature request as well after you submit it.

Given the little effort necessary to get a Trust Level 1 on discourse I suggest to consider closing off (writing and voting) the category to new users (Trust 0). Learning the bare minimum about ZFS and TN while engaging a little bit with the community before qualifying to express an opinion in Feature Requests seems a reasonable requirement.
