Access Point

Hello Guys,

So, i recently had a few upgrades and also planned to setup a Firewall and for that i’ll have to use an Access Point for the wireless devices which will also benefit from the firewall. Initially, i planned to go with TP-LINK and i had my eyes at EAP783 model. Now, my question is after all the news, should i really go with TP-LINK or just look at some other vendors? If so, please suggest some.

Thanks

Bump!

A WiFi access point is somewhat dependent on these things:

  • Location, will be it central to the service area?
  • If you coverage area is too large, were you going to have repeaters?
  • Did you want to future proof with Tri-Bands?
  • And one of the most important factors, cost?

I was looking at a new NetGear Tri-Band with repeater option, (aka having an extra dedicated full-duplex link for another remote access point). But, for me, I prefer to future proof my hardware, and right now cost is less of a concern.

As for vendor or model recommendations, I don’t really have any. Perhaps others are the same way, thus they did not answer.

Yes, it will be in the main room and from there, all wireless device connects like phone, iPad and Laptops.

Not quite large. Most of the time, the devices will be like 5-10ft away and sometimes 25-50m away. Currently, a crap one serves which was provided by the ISP but once i deploy the firewall, its gonna act as dummy in a bridge mode.

Currently, not thinking about having repeaters but if it does fits my budget, why not!

Yes, that’s mandatory. Recently, bought a few devices with the WiFi 7 so it would be nice to have. I also waited for sometime for WiFi 7.

Not too little and not too much. I know for everyone, their budget depends and in my case, i would say somewhere around $500-1000 (max)

Same here friend, except for the repeater as the area is small under 2000 Sq ft.

Yes, i used TP-Link in past and it served great for ADSL connection back then so i was thinking maybe get that. But with all the news on the TP-LINK, i’m bit afraid and not sure what vendor to choose or whether i can grab the TP-LINK EAP783 model as decided previously.

@Arwen Any recommendation on this basis?

Other than using a reputable vendor, Netgear, TrendMicro, or Zyxel, I don’t really have any model recommendation.

Hmm. Should i go for TP-Link then? I’m only afraid by the recent TP-LINK news ;(

I have had very good experiences in general with Ubiquiti U6 or U7 Pro, especially now that the motherboard issues appear to have been ironed out. Add a Unifi docker container or a cloudkey to control the things and they do very well, even in more complicated setups (i.e. multiple VLANS, guest / main Wifi networks, and so on).

Is that WiFi7?

The U7 Pro is WiFi 7 compatible. Tread carefully among the many different UBNT models re protocol compatibility, radios, MIMO, Ethernet speeds, etc.

My colleagues like Ruckus for enterprise over Aruba, but I haven’t personally used either.

I’m using TP-Link at home now. I installed one of their ‘cheap’ wifi7 mesh kits because the smb/prosumer wifi7 options were limited at the time. It’s my first TP-Link product because I always associated them with ‘cheap stuff,’ which was probably a misconception based on the ISP-supplied stuff I saw people using. It’s been extremely solid.

I haven’t dug deep into the TP-Link vulnerabilities, but from what I could tell it was triggered by a genuinely critical vulnerability in a budget model. I don’t think they are any less-secure than other brands, but politics do play a role. Companies are beholden to the government, and the fear is about unknown vulnerabilities and the potential impact.

I intend to look at Omada (TP-Link) in the future.

Will have a look at it!

Been a TP-LINK user since the ADSL era. Works solid!

Yes, you’re right on the budget model thingy and the politics shit.

I’ve been planning to get EAP783 as that fits my needs.
