ACL Change FAILED

Can anyone explain this error?

[EFAULT] acltool [clone] on path /mnt/Pool0/Files failed with error: [nfs4xdr_winacl: flags: 0x00000009 nfs4xdr_winacl: 3D Objects: acl_set_file() failed: Invalid argument nfs4xdr_winacl: 3D Objects: set_acl() failed: Invalid argument]

Thanks

that error is dying on the folder named 3D Objects, not on the whole pool. windows drops that special folder into user trees and nfs4xdr_winacl sometimes chokes on it with Invalid argument when you apply recursive acls.

for me the usual fix is either:

  • temporarily move/rename 3D Objects out of /mnt/Pool0/Files, apply the acl, then put it back (or just delete it if you do not need it)
  • or apply the acl without the traverse that hits that dir

also worth a quick check that snapdir is not visible on that dataset (older winacl fails were .zfs related). if you paste whether this is an smb home-style share and if 3D Objects is empty, easier to say which path is less annoying.

The issue was something to do with inheritance, not specific to this folder. Turning it on fixed the issue. I still don’t really understand what the error means.
