Add unionfs or mergerfs and rdam, Enhancement! Then beat all other nas systems!

Please add unionfs or mergerfs similar disk consolidation feature and rdam implementation.

Reason 1: I have multiple backups, I don’t need to think about data security redundancy, and I want to maximize the use of disk space. Because I use it to store media files such as movies and TV shows, I don’t care if they are lost or corrupted. I like to collect junk and I often buy used hard drives that are obsolete from cloud server vendors for my movie storage.

Reason 2: I have a lot of high speed solid state with strong performance, 40G/25G intranet with Windows system is not enough for me to move and edit huge hard disk files, I need rdma to increase my intranet time rate.

Reason 3: I’m in a very cumbersome process right now, I’m using a virtual machine on truenas to run unraid and fnos for multiple hard drive federation to achieve mergerfs-like effects for easy file management and maximizing space utilization, and then nesting a virtual Windows server to achieve rdma for network speedup.

I’m struggling with this now, is there any hope of simplifying all this tediousness and making it a one-stop-shop on truenas?

Fine. But then what do you want ZFS for?

While I appreciate someone asking for TrueNAS to incorporate my software I’m not sure it really fits their main target audience. I believe some people have manually setup mergerfs on the Linux variant of TrueNAS but I have no personal experience.

That said… if TrueNAS wants to do so… hit me up

arc caching, de-duplication, compression, snapshots. Although these features are also present on Btrfs, but other nas systems can not do and truenas such a fine control, I like to be able to fully control my nas!

I don’t exactly store only movie and TV shows. I have other storage pools that I use safely and professionally. Without buying another machine, I’d like to propose some extensions to make truenas more approachable to home users and rag collectors. I often recommend truenas to my friends, but since they often go for used hard drives, it makes them go for unraid.

i don’t want this, but i see how many want this based on requests i have seen in other NAS software development queues.

so +1 vote from me

and @trapexit i agree that this might not be for enterprises, but by that logic half of the stable apps should be jettisoned too… they are not apps enterprises need… not to mention some of the mainline features in the product… but that seems pretty gate-keeping if truenas wants to jettison the non-enterprise portion of their community (just my observation as someone brand new to this community)

this would be useful way to let people do things like merge multiple zfs data sets if they so choose, or use disimiallr disks in a pool etc etc
