My current setup is a truenas scale ( up to date ) . Witha two 4 Tb drive in a raid.
My question is can I add two more 4tb drives to expand the space ( my assumption is it is a raid z (where can I verify that I not finding that info in the gui ) .
Meaning at this time with two 4tb drive in the raid my total space is 4 TB with 1.5 Tb available. Will adding two more 4tb reduce the available space?
raidz1 is available with 3 disks minimum.
raidz2 is available with 4 disks minimum.
with 2 disks your only options are either a mirror, resulting in 4tb space or a stripe which would result in 8tb storage but no redundancy.
Since you wrote you have 4 tb of space it should be a mirror.
Adding another 2 disks in another mirror and striping them together would result in 8tb max available space.
So add the other two in another pool and then Stripe them together will result in 4 x4tb = 8tb of storage ?
No
Add another vdev to the existing pool with 2 disks in mirror
o basically doing this …
Adding a Mirror vdev to Existing ZFS Pool in TrueNAS
Other question I have I am building out a new machine with a bigger case to be able to support more drives.
Now I am assuming I will need to install trunas on the new box and then I can export my configuration from the old box and import it to the new.
Once that is done plug in the old hard drives into the new box and reboot and I should be back in business and be able to move on to the above of adding the two new drives?
Thanks again for the input
Thats the way its meant to work. Although I would have the old drives attached before importing the config
And you may well have to adapt the network settings.
So on the new Treunas setup connect the old drives and then import my config and I should be good ( with no data loss )?
Thanks again
Definitely no data loss—a pool is readable by any system which supports ZFS.
The configuration file file carries over your user definitions and share settings, so you do not have to recreate these.
Which leaves networking, if the new machine comes with a new NIC and a new MAC address. Quick work…
when I stripe to the previous mirrors I am assuming this the steps
Key steps to stripe a dataset in TrueNAS:
- Access the Storage Pool: Navigate to the “Storage” section in your TrueNAS web interface and select the pool where you want to create a striped dataset.
- Create a New Dataset: Click “Add Dataset” and provide a name for your dataset.
- Set Stripe Size: ( I am assuming if I am adding two more 4 tb drives this would be 8 TB )
Thanks again
