Advice for a newbie - SCALE or CORE?

Greetings,

This is my first post, diving into a new world…

I’ve been building my own windows desktop systems for almost 25 years and have become very comfortable. Currently have 3 desktop and 4 laptop systems in my home environment. Have been thinking about a home server for years and recently lost a hard drive (and associated data) on a home laptop.

Going to start with parts from an older system (Z170 board) but 2x new 8TB hard drives in a simple mirrored setup. Intent is to keep daily data on individual systems but schedule periodic backups to the NAS. I don’t need speed.

I’ve watched numerous youtubes about CORE and SCALE, as well as reading similar posts here. SCALE is tempting because CORE seems like it may have a limited future, but I’m interested in the thoughts of others here on which way to go for a simple setup like this.

Thanks in advance. I expect to spend lots of time here in the future!

CORE is a dead system walking. SCALE.

Thanks!

Depends on what you want but yeah, general advice is to go SCALE.
I’m not so sure about CORE having a short future though; maybe not an actively developed one, but from iX recenent statements it still has a few years ahead[1].

  1. Not that I fully trust their statements though: recent history does not allow us to do so. ↩︎
