Advice on rebuild

I inherited a truenas system a few years back. Just curious what your thoughts are on improving the aetup.

Obiosuly ECC RAM MB and processing supporting that I hear is ideal. I have a chance to get a AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D for $250.

Thanks for your time and advice.

Motherboard: B250 RM Pro4-IB
Processor: Intel(R) Core™ i7-7700K CPU @ 4.20GHz

Drives: 2x SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus SSD 2TB - M.2 NVMe in 2x SABRENT NVMe M.2 SSD to PCIe 5x TOSHIBA TB HDD 7200 rpm and 1x WD 20 TB HDD 7200 rpm in RAIDZ1

Uaed for arrs, sabnzb, qbitorrent, Plex, Nextcloud, and a few VMs

Currently running TreuNAE scale ElectricEel-24.10.0.2

You didnt’ mention your boot disk, are you booting from a sata drive? USB is discouraged.
A six drive VDEV in Raid-Z1 is risky due to the 20TB drive size. If a drive dies and your system is resilvering, it stands a good chance of another drive dying. I would recommend backing the data up and recreating the VDEV as Raid-Z2

I’ll just point you to the Resources articles. Browse that to get ideas about ZFS related items. There are a few builds in there. You probably should consider getting a HBA for the drives to attach to as it allows more drives but will take up a PCI-e slot.

I’d just stick that into a gaming rig & enjoy. I don’t think the extra cache does much for ZFS.

Edit - I was wrong & SmallBarky pointed out my mistake in the next post. You can ignore this part

Your current system is likely fine - only thing I’m confused about is

Not sure how a single disk exists in RAIDZ1

Six drives in Raid-Z1

Currently I boot from one of the ssds and us the other for my apps to run off of and their storage. Any recommendations? I will read through that article as well. Thanks for being helpful. Yes 6 drives in Raidz1.

Overpowered for a NAS, and you need at least 6 SATA ports while B650 provides only 4.
Put that 7800X3D in a desktop and go for an ECC-enabled AM4 (B550) or Intel platform with enough SATA ports for your NAS.

Thank you so much. This is good to know. Will look into that.
