I’ve never had this happen with any upgrade, but when I upgrade to electric eel, my pool is there, in a degraded state, but there are no drives. When I go back and load the previous version of Truenas, everything is there and working fine. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to export my pool first, and then import it to EE? Any help is appreciated.
Did you clear your browser cache after upgrading? We’ve seen a few issues where users have not done that step.
What does this command from the shell give you (you’ll need sudo)
zpool status
Do you happen to a LSI SAS2008 HA??? I ask because I can’t upgrade at all right now. The new kernel won’t detect any of the disks attached to my HBA, which includes my boot pool. This prevents the upgrade from proceeding because there’s no disk to boot. However, if I just select the old version at boot everything goes back to working fine.
I’m in the process of gathering more information via the install media shell, which also doesn’t detect any disks but at least lets me get into a working shell. Will probably open a ticket on Jira once I have more logs gathered.
Zpool status just shows my boot pool and my app pool. My main storage pool isnt even listed. Its like it doesnt see the controller.
I had the same problem. All it took was to do another reboot. Voila, all pools and disks restored. Side note: The initial installation of EE bricked one of my boot pool disks. The newer mirror was fine and was able to boot to that.
You can use lspci
to see what controllers are seen by Linux.
If a reboot doesn’t work, check your BIOS can see the HBA and the relevant settings are still correct.
Then try removing and reseating the HBA and see if that makes it become visible.
I’ve rebooted several times, power cycled, reseated the HBA, moved it to a new slot. lspci shows it is recognized. All BIOS settings are correct. I’m about to wipe the boot drive and do a fresh install, but then I’ll lose my ability to go back to a different version, unless I install that version from scratch. Everything from a hardware perspective is correct, but there is something about EE that is not recognizing the pool. I’m at a loss.
And if you revert to your previous boot environment everything works fine?
System Settings → Boot
Correct. When I revert to the previous version, ‘ouila!’, back to normal.
Ah! Yes, I have the LSI SAS2008 HA which has worked fine until EE. Let me know if you get any answers.
Please boot with the new version and run the following commands in a shell and copy and paste the results:
lsblk -bo NAME,MODEL,PTTYPE,TYPE,START,SIZE,PARTTYPENAME,PARTUUID
lspci
sas2flash -list
sas3flash -list
sudo zpool status -v
sudo zpool import
Thanks.
Note: Put the results from each command separately between 2 lines each of which contains just ``` i.e.
```
command output here
```
Here is the output. All drives connected to the HBA are missing, but the 2 SSD drives which are connected directly to a SATA port on the motherboard are showing up.

I was actually getting mpt2sas errors similar to this post: Electric Eel and pool VDEV expansion and reported dataset disk space
I’m not sure why this just showed up with the 24.10 release, but I was able to boot into the old version and run midclt call system.advanced.update '{ "kernel_extra_options": "pci=realloc=off" }'
.
After this I was able to upgrade to 24.10 just fine and haven’t had any futher issues with my HBA.
Someone also suggested turning on SR-IOV in my BIOS, which might be specific to supermicro boards, but I haven’t bothered to check mine since it seems to be fine now.
Hello @CompPhy,
OP of linked thread here.
My motherboard is a supermicro and has the SR-IOV option in bios (it was disabled).
For my first attempt to workaround the issue, I tried to enable this option, but it didn’t help for the HBA issue.
I then added the kernel option the same way you did, and it permanently resolved the issue.
It seems related to a change in the recent kernels, and maybe this option should be added by default in TrueNAS for hardware backward compatibility ?
Kind regards
(Post removed as it related to SAS2008 not being seen at all and not disks not being seen.)
This seems to be a bug and even if you find a workaround as above you should probably raise a Jira ticket with iX to get it permanently resolved in 24.10.1.
A buddy with a very simular build to me (same board, etc.) called me up having this issue. I was not.
Thanks for the suggestion of the kernel tweak, that got him up and running, but it begs the question what is causing this. We got both platforms prett much idential for testing and he still experianced the issue, where I am not.
I cannot find anything in JIRA and would love more info on this. Any updates from anyone?
