Backport Realtek RTL8127 10G NIC Driver to TrueNAS (hopefully sooner than 26.04)

Problem:
The RTL8727 is a very popular new 10G NIC that is stable, power-efficient, and runs much cooler than the older Aquantia AQC113. It is an ideal choice for homelab and prosumer NAS builds.

However, the driver for the RTL8727 was only added to the mainline Linux kernel in version 6.15.

Even TrueNAS 26.04 (Halfmoon) is based on the 6.12 kernel from what I understand, which means this new hardware is not supported, forcing users to stick with older, hotter cards like the AQC113.

Request:
Since TrueNAS uses a custom kernel, would it be possible for the engineering team to backport the RTL8727 driver from kernel 6.15 into the 6.12 kernel used by Halfmoon?

This would provide a huge benefit to the community, improve hardware compatibility for new builds, and allow us to use more power-efficient 10G hardware.

Thank you!

No 8727 is 8127, and the driver supports the 6.12 kernel.

Oh darn. Yes, I meant 8127..

Please close this and I will create a new one

Yes, I cannot edit. Posted a proper one here: Backport r8127 driver for Realtek RTL8127 10G NICs

I can edit… but since you’ve jumped the gun, you might want to remove your vote here and signal your own thread for closure.
Do NOT expect TrueNAS to act swiftly tough. Upgrading kernel is a major effort and will never occur outside a new release.

Flagged for moderation already. Removed the vote too. I understand that a full kernel change is a big undertaking, which is why I am requesting for the driver module to be added, so that users don’t end up tampering with their rootfs to get it to work.
