It seems one of my disks is faulty. I keep getting an error :
May 15 17:15:39 truenas 1 2024-05-15T17:15:39.255383+03:00 truenas smartd 1120 - - Device: /dev/ciss0 [cciss_disk_05] [SAT], 8 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
May 15 17:15:39 truenas 1 2024-05-15T17:15:39.255487+03:00 truenas. smartd 1120 - - Device: /dev/ciss0 [cciss_disk_05] [SAT], 8 Offline uncorrectable sectors
At the same time the pool shows ONLINE (Unhealthy)
However when I go to the disk list , all disks show as online and disk da5 is shows all smart tests as successfull.
I am not really sure which drive is the faulty one , if its really da5 that I need to pull out.
How can I find our which disks is Device: /dev/ciss0 [cciss_disk_05] by its serial ?
If you look at the smart report for the disk in question you will see it has non zero values for the smart attributes for “uncorrectable sectors” and “pending sectors”
Uncorrectable is a sector that could not return the data that is written to it.
pending sector would be the same sector, but basically after you next wrote to it it should know what to return next time
This indicates a failing disk. If inside warranty should be rma’d
If outside warranty, you could try wiping with zeros to “refresh” all the sectors, but typically you’ll just see the same issue again in the future
Which basically means the HD will fail to return your data in future.
And it’s up to you if you replace. I would generally.
You can manually retrieve the smart report with smartctl -a /dev/da5 where da5 is your device id. Iirc.
Hello Guys and thanks for the update.
I paste the output. Seems to be da5 indeed.
Its on HBA passthrough so the disk management is done by ZFS and the OS and not the controller.
I already ordered a new disk to replace this one. Can’t wait so long for the RMA with a bad disk.
I must poweroff the machine as I don’t remember in which slot this disk is plugged in. After I plug the new one in its position will it automatically take in the new disk or I need to manually do actions ?
Thanks for all the help !

Please in future put long output like this into a codeblock (```)
I would guess the disk is bad - but it could be issues with the controller too. Where it’s just this one disk alerting I’d lean more towards a disk issue though.
If you can, RMA it (even if it’s after you’ve replaced the disk, then you can add it as a hot spare :P). Power-on hours are 2.5 years so you may still be in warranty (haven’t had dealings with Seagate before so no idea if they have a manufacturer warranty you could contact them for)
I’m still a little hung up on TrueNAS alerting on /dev/ciss0. Do you know the exact HBA in use? Can you also check smartctl -d cciss,5 -a /dev/ciss0 and see if it’s the same disk?
Irrespective of the outcome of the long test, non-zero pending and offline sectors mean that the drive is growing hardware defects. This is a ground for RMA if the drive is under warranty. Replace it as soon as practically possible.
And look into the drive controller and this ciss driver… This is not good either.
cc: @dan who’s had some personal experience with this controller before (judging from the old forums). I’m not sure if this is normal or not (/dev/cciss0), it’s really not my area.
All I know is that it doesn’t look right
