Best configuration for 3 drives each 4TB

Hi!

Just finished building my first NAS. I have 3 HDD of 4 TB each. Two Seagate Ironwolf and one Seagate Skyhawk (all of them are CMR if I checked correctly).

What configuration would you recommend? I’ve considered RAIDZ1. Right now I don’t need that much storing capacity I guess but if down the road I need it, I don’t want to rebuild the entire pool if I add more capacity.

The NAS will be used for pc backup, photos backup, storing files and couple VMs (1-2).

VMs would do better on a mirror (and on SSD).
If you don’t need much capacity, a 2-way or 3-way mirror has the benefit of flexibility for future evolutions, while raidz1 cannot evolve to raidz2—which you would like at some point if you add ever more drives.

Let’s say I configure them to 3-way mirror and down the road I add another 4TB drive. Then what could the config look like?

Take one drive out of the 3-way mirror and stripe two mirror vdevs.
