Hello, Truenas noob here.
I’m trying to setup a new system just for storage backup.
However, when I boot into the Truenas installer and try to run it, the screen goes black. Then all it does is have some drive activity for about 5 seconds and nothing else.
I have tried many fixes that I found online with no luck.
The parts are:
Asus Pro WS W680-ACE IPMI
Intel Core i7 12700k
2x 16GB DDR5 4800MHz
2x Crucial P3 500GB NVME
4x WD Red 8TB HDD
I got to install windows in this exact configuration just to ensure that the system could run something (and to make it easy for me to update firmware)
I was really excited about getting this beast going but now I am just annoyed.
Thank you all in advance.
Please share the fixes you have tried.
Do you have Secureboot turned off in BIOS?
Do you get a menu when booting the TrueNAS installer and then it goes black or do you not even get that? Have you tested the TrueNAS installer boot device on any other computer?
You really aren’t giving details on what and where it is going wrong.
I’m sorry for omiting those details.
I am able to boot into the installer where I can choose between “Install Truenas” and “Install Truenas (115200)”. It’s when I select either of these options that the screen goes black and gets stuck there.
I have disabled Secureboot, disabled all e-cores, multi threading, and Thunderbolt. I also tried installing Truenas Scale 23, and Core 13, 12, and 11. On top of that, I disconnected the IPMI card, removed one of the memory modules and tried a different memory slot with that module that was left. I also used a different flashdrive and an external NVME SSD as an installer drive.
I also read that someone worked around this by enabling CSM but in my BIOS that setting is grayed.
Don’t enable that Certified Scrum Master (CSM). Web searched aren’t much help. I saw too many YouTube shorts making fun of the PM, credentials, story points, etc.
All jokes aside, you have been busy trying multiple things. Thanks for posting all that.
I am not sure what to try or how to see why you are getting stuck. I am hoping some else will have some ideas or a more verbose option on installation. What is the current firmware? I don’t know if that will make any difference.
For anyone running into this same issue…
I was able to connect the installer USB and the boot drive to a different system and complete the installation there. However, even with Scale already installed I was having trouble with the system getting stuck during startup.
This time, I removed the IPMI card from the MB and connected the installer to one of the front panel USB ports and was able to reinstall Scale with no issues (yay).
After that, I discovered that whenever that IPMI card was connected, the system would get stuck during startup. So, the card is back in the box never to be used again and my NAS is running with no more issues.
From what i could gather, it looks like Scale has issues with the graphics processor in the IPMI card.
You might want to Report A Bug. iX Systems would probably want the make & model of the IPMI card along with the debug data from you system.
Report A Bug at top, right of this forum or you can log into your TrueNAS server and hit the Send Feedback (looks like a smile? upper right of TrueNAS window once logged in.)
Then the Submit A Bug tab. This way allows you to create the hardware list, etc and describe the problem.
You can use either method. Forum create a ticket and then attach data or direct from TrueNAS. Mention all the versions you have tried
Same issue here. Wanted to install a fresh system using Truenas Scale 24.10 but got a blank screen after selecting to install Truenas… I tried with the prior version 24.04.01, same issue. Impossible to install Truenas. Unless I find a solution to this I guess I’ll have to move on to something else.
Post your detailed hardware. The blank screen issue is usually an incompatability.
Also, what bios or UEFI options are you using? Changing those may help. The install is getting hung up on something.
The issue is now fixed. Secured boot was set to a custom option and didn’t notice it before. I’ve set that to standard in the BIOS and now all is fine. The BIOS is set to legacy & UEFI.
