Bridge configuration (2 NIC)

Hello there

I currently have a router limited to 1GB but the rest of my network is 10GB ready.
As a transitional solution, I’d like to get at least 10GB between my desktop PC and my Truenas server.

At the moment I’m using both networks on these two machines (see diagram below), but Windows is unable to manage such a scenario, so the 1GB connexion with Internet access takes precedence over the 10GB one (including the local network…), which means I have to change manually connection each time I need to transfer file from/to my Truenas…

So the idea would be to simplify this with only a 10GB connexion between my Desktop computer and Truenas, with Truenas acting as bridge to allow my desktop computer to get access to the router (meaning internet + rest of lan).

Knowing that it’s my router that sets the static addresses.

I’ve made several attempts but I can’t get the router to recognize my desktop PC: I only have access to the Truenas server.

Is this something possible?

Perfectly possible at least in principle. I have used a setup like this multiple times with TN CORE and FreeBSD that’s how I know it’s supposed to work.

No experience with the particularities of the Linux bridge in TN SCALE, though, sorry.

Can you just buy a switch and connect everything via a switch ?

you’re just overcomplicating the whole thing

Good to know that it’s possible, so I need to test more!

A bridge is a 2 port switch so…

And given the price of 10GB switches and my limited number of devices, it’s much better to invest that amount in a 10GB router.

what ? what kind of total non-sense is this ?

$45 for a switch is like skipping a restaurant meal on a weekend

140€ without the SFP+ module and without 1GB RJ45… (so expensive and do not fit the needs)

If it doesn’t seem expensive to you, please send me the amount via paypal

If not, please consider taking part in answering my initial question instead of insulting me by taking me for an idiot.
Or abstain, it’s also very good.

Same answer than below.

This offer is not available in my country, and if you spend more than 5sec looking into the details of this product, this is very poor quality with SFP+ compatibility issue, overheating and poor performances.

What is the purpose of these interventions?

I just copied you random screenshot that I found in 1min.

Try looking at Amazon or AliExpress.

There are tons of options with 10gbaseT or with cheap SFPs

This is not what price on AliExpress says and I’m pretty sure AliExpress pricing is universal across Europe (I’m in EU)

You have neither defined your “needs” (how many devices? copper and/or optical?) nor your country or budget…
But if your country uses euro as a currency, I strongly doubt that Mikrotik products are not available, and I even strongly doubt that none of the countless managed or unmanaged Chinese switches with 8*2.5G ports and 1-2 10G ports in any combination of 10GBase-T and SFP+ is available.

140 € is not expensive to me. But since you did not provide your PayPal address either, your request is irreceivable.

My kill file, however, is indefinitely accessible to self-declared idiots who attack those trying to help based on poorly defined requirements.

Plonk!

Put your 2 truenas NICs into a bridge together. That should just work. Can you share a screenshot of your networking screen?

OK, I have a mostly empty 4 port NIC and I just tried to turn 2 ports into switch via adding them to a bridge. It didn’t work at all and I’m not getting a link light on my switch. Anyone have any ideas why this didn’t work?

So rude, I wonder why mods didn’t ban you already.

People are trying to help you and you call them assholes.

So rude

Removed offensive comments. Snip Snip

Disembarking by ignoring the initial request and being as condescending as possible in order to impose “your solution” (which is totally inappropriate) is not help.

Or maybe you’ve got a very particular definition of what help is…

I managed to configure the bridge successfully!
Totally doable, I just had some conflicts with my router config.

Unfortunately, given the highly toxic reception here, I have absolutely no desire at the moment to share the solution (sorry about that, it’s not against you).
To be seen in the future.

No one cares about your solution as TrueNAS is not a bridge, it is a NAS.
You’re using it for a purpose it was not designed or built for.

And also, configuring bridges on Linux is so trivial, you didnt even bother to do RTFM before creating useless topics.
