Can I move disks from motherboard SATA ports to HBA?

Greetings

I want to expand my storage, and soon I’ll need HBA. Currently, I’m looking for 2nd hand LSI HBA 93XX-8i cards (or at least something based on the SAS 3008 chip).

Once I purchase and install the HBA (in IT-mode), can I just unplug some of my disks from the motherboard and plug them in the HBA instead? Do I need to do any preparations before that?

Also, while I am expanding my storage, can I re-order some of the disks that are connected to the motherboard SATA ports? I suppose TN wouldn’t mind if I swap a several, as it wouldn’t depend on the onboard SATA ports numbers.

Thanks.

Yes

Power off the system.

Consider using a 9500. It uses less power and has a lower airflow requirement.

I agree, but even the 9400s are more than twice as expensive as the 9300s. The 8 pots 9300 ones are staying below 15w according to Broadcom:

I’ve made some adjusments to my case and currently my airflow is pretty on point IMO.

Yes you can. When I have had the need to replace disks, I remove the one needing replacing from the caddy (final physical install position) and replace it with the new disk. That way the new disk is connected to the HBA and positioned in its final location. I then connect the old disk being replaced to a SATA port temporarily while doing the resilver.

In short as long as the disks are connected, TN doesn’t seem to have any issues.
