Configuration Advice for Home Lab NAS

So, I’ve been using TrueNAS at work for several years now and just upgraded our network servers and have been gifted the following:

  1. R720XD - dual E5-2697 - 12 cores - 512GB DDR3 memory
  2. 22 - 2TB - spinners, 4 - 1 TB SSDs

I want to run storage as well as VM’s for various services and I want to eliminate or greatly reduce IO delay.

Looking for recommendations on pool layouts? Should I boot from mirrored SSDs? Use the other SSD in mirrored config for SLOG?

What do you think?

How much does electricity cost where you live?

I (living in Germany) would never run a system with 22 small disk drives and all the other components to hold them. 4 16 TB drives hold more data at a fraction of the power consumption. Smaller case, less cooling, smaller backplane, no separate HBA, so smaller power supply …

Yeah, well electricity isn’t the issue because all of the equipment was gifted to me. The payback in electrical savings to purchase a few large drives would be about 20 years.
