Seeking advice on configuration strategy. I built a system that has 50X 1.2TB 2.5” 10K drives.
It seems not large enough to use draid and small enough drives to use RaidZ. I have some drives that were gifted to me but have a lot of hours. I thought I would group them in one pool with a couple spares and move to SSDs when they fail. 8 drives Z2 with 2 spares. I have two main datasets that need backup. So use a 4-drive Z1 pool for storing apps. That leaves 36 drives split into two 18 drive pools with Z1 or Z2.
Hardware:
HP DL 380 Gen 9, HP Expander(12Gb/speed), LSI 12Gb/sec speed
Frankenstein JBOD build with HP expander and 2X- 8X SFF Gen 8 drive shelves(12Gb/speed) and 1X -10X SFF Gen 8 Drive shelf (6Gb/speed). So drives in the Gen 8 Shelves go through 2 expanders, and the 10x shelf has a built-in expander.
So for best performance, the first pool goes in the 380DL chassis (someday it might be SSD). Will the location where the drives are installed affect performance, given the drive speed? The network is 10Gb/sec.
